I love the extension she gives to this lesson! Having the students come up with and share their own fraction addition songs can help the students get creative and have fun. They will feel independent and love the act of "playing teacher". The students will gain so much from teaching other students.
I love the fact that the students also use the lesson to learn about active listening. It is important in more ways than one in the classroom. It not only helps them hear particular parts of music, but it also helps students focus on listening in the classroom. Sometimes students choose not to listen, but learning the importance and techniques to listen can almost make "listening" fun. It is an amazing thing and so I feel like this lesson gives us a great opportunity to teach fun things like listening, music, and fractions all together!
This active listening also exposes the students to classical music! I love classical music in the classroom and think it is so important to expose the children to it. It is important to realize that many schools are dropping music programs due to budget cuts or other reasons, so including this lesson in your plan can have multiple benefits.
I feel that is so important to bring math into lessons with art. I think that this is a lesson that does this so well. Even as an addition to a lesson would be helpful to make the lessons fun and exciting. I hope that this is another resource to inspire you to again use song and music in your math lessons and help students succeed!
