Here is a little detail about my teaching philosophy:
This blog post is not necessarily a "math" themed post, but is definitely applied to all subjects and especially math. I feel that art is such an important avenue for teaching. Students need to explore many different ways of learning and different forms of art. And with this art...comes messiness. And lots of it! I know as a child I was always so messy, but that is when I had the most fun and made the longest lasting memories!
Bringing this art and mess into my classroom is so important to me! Especially in math. Math can be hard and boring, and at times dry (not to me as a math teacher, but some students have never had good experiences!). With art, and arts integrated lessons where the students do not even realize that they are learning, the students really feel empowered and ready to learn. They become more interested and really want to learn about math because they know it will be a fun experience.
The picture of this T-shirt, says it all. Teaching art helps students gain critical thinking skills, problem solving, creativity, and have higher self-esteem. These all, as I mentioned a little before, breed good math students. When it comes to a math problem, students need to be able to think about what they are doing in critical ways and use problem solving. It is so hard to help the students learn critical thinking and problem solving. With art, they learn it naturally. Arts integrated lessons and especially math lessons activity engage multiple parts of the brain and bring about these skills.
I hope you moms out there and teachers all encourage your students to make messes and make art. This is important to your student’s future and math future!!
Thanks,
Alexa
